From All-Star Cheerleader to Yoga Teacher: My Journey to the Mat

I began my cheerleading journey in 2001 through both school and all-star cheerleading. At St. Denis School in Manasquan, NJ, I cheered on the sidelines during basketball games and quickly discovered the joy of being part of a team. Around the same time, I was introduced to the world of All-Star Cheerleading—a year-round, competitive version of the sport where athletes train and compete at local, regional, national, and world championships.

My first all-star team was at Elite Sport All Stars in Brick, NJ, which later became Jersey Justice All Star Cheerleading. As my passion for the sport grew, I found my true home at Jersey Shore Allstars in Lakewood, NJ. In 2006, the program transitioned and became Spirit Factory All Stars in Toms River, NJ—a pivotal chapter in my cheerleading journey.

Through years of hard work and dedication, I progressed to the elite level of the sport, now known as Worlds Level. In 2006, I had the opportunity to step onto the mat at The Cheerleading Worlds in the infamous Large Senior All Girl division representing Spirit Factory All Stars.

Through years of dedication and hard work, I progressed to the elite level of the sport, now known as Worlds Level. In 2006, I had the opportunity to step onto the mat at The Cheerleading Worlds in the infamous Large Senior All Girl division.

The feeling of standing on that mat for two minutes and thirty seconds is unlike anything I’ve ever experienced. The countless hours of practice, the unwavering dedication, the trust in your teammates, the energy, the crowd cheering you on—it all comes together in one unforgettable moment. Today, at 37 years old, I can still close my eyes and relive every second of it.

One of my favorite memories was at CANAM Nationals in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, when my team earned its first bid to The Cheerleading Worlds. Our team word that season was “Believe.” We believed in ourselves, believed in each other, and believed we would make it to Worlds. Hearing, “Receiving an at-large bid to The Cheerleading Worlds…” was a moment that will stay with me forever.

My senior year of high school in 2007, I had the opportunity to take the Worlds mat one last time.

Looking back, cheerleading taught me so much more than athleticism. It taught me discipline, resilience, teamwork, and the power of community. Most importantly, it taught me what it feels like to be part of something bigger than yourself.

When I discovered Vinyasa yoga in 2012, I wasn’t just searching for another way to move my body—I was searching for that same sense of connection and belonging. In yoga, I found a new home. While the movements were different, the feeling was familiar: community, support, presence, and shared experience.

My journey from cheerleader to yoga teacher feels like a natural evolution. Both have shown me that movement has the power to transform us, bring us together, and remind us that we are stronger when we move through life in connection with others.

And just like my cheerleading journey, yoga continues to teach me to trust the process, believe in myself, and rise to each new season with an open heart.

🌊 Flow Like the Tide. ☀️ Rise Like the Sun.
